Digital Communications Coordinator

Part-Time Contract:    7 months (possibility to renew contract for another year)
Commitment:              8-12 hours/week (flexible)
Compensation:           $22-$30/hour (depending on skills and experience)

Location:                      Remote (home-based office) and project locations in Toronto

Background

The Ubuntu Community Collective (UCC) is an emerging non-profit grassroots organization on the shared platform at the Children’s Peace Theatre. We curate a creative and healing space for African Diaspora single mothers and their children to come together for rejuvenation in a supportive, non-judgmental, and holistic community vibe. We are committed to address the health, social, financial, cultural, and political realities of African Diaspora single mothers through an anti-oppression, trauma-informed, decolonized, antipatriarchal, healing-centered lens. Our culture and approach are based on the African concept of ubuntu (the interconnectedness of humanity). Our activities and programs run year-round, and we want to make sure that the community we serve, and our supporters know what we are up to. We also host events and support activities that serve the well-being of African Diaspora communities in Toronto.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Program Director and working closely with the Digital Media Team, the Communications Coordinator will ensure that our well-crafted messaging reaches our target audiences on our different channels and platforms at appropriate times. The Communications Coordinator will help to develop the Ubuntu Community Collective’s voice, list of resources, networks, and a solid online presence. They are committed to provide excellent, respectful and non-judgmental support to the Ubuntu Community Collective, and be aligned with our mission and values.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate UCC digital programming efforts

  • Coordinate the digital promotion and marketing of our programs and events

  • Develop and create digital communications materials to support our work including newsletters, website copy, social media campaigns, blogs, and press releases

  • Coordinate and monitor workflow for the Digital Media Team

  • Build and manage our digital network and community

  • Maintain and update contact and email lists

  • Develop and execute digital communications strategies that advance our mission

  • Set up and monitor analytics on our different platforms and create detailed reports

  • Coordinate volunteers, support staff, vendors and more to support our activities and events

  • Outreach to press outlets, ally organizations, influencers etc. and build strategic partnerships

  • Support UCC by attending meetings, and providing support for action items

  • Assist with the analysis, writing and editing of grants and donor reports

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • College/University degree in communications/mass media/related field AND/OR 2+ years of equivalent work experience

  • Lived experience of racism including an understanding of the impact of racism and other oppressions on the health and mental health of African Diaspora people

  • Ability to understand and apply principles of anti-oppression and trauma-informed frameworks

  • A self-starter who is comfortable working in a collaborative, creative and dynamic woman-led setting

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills - proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet firm deadlines

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and clear verbal and written communication skills

  • Computer skills and design experience with a high proficiency to use applications (MS Office, Adobe CS, Later, Signal, Whatsapp, Clockify,…) and web platforms (Wix, Asana, Canva, Zoom, Mailchimp, SurveyMonkey, EventBrite, WordPress,…)

  • Demonstrated skill and experience in various social media platforms

  • Willingness to work flexible hours

  • A critical and solutions-focused thinker, able to brainstorm respectfully and inclusively
